The Symbolism of Colour

  1. Green represents new life, youth and hope, but also inexpensive and naivety. Green stands for grass, growth, and the natural landscape of newly discovered territory. Travellers are given the green light as a signal that they can move forward. On page 25, Fitzgerald suggests that the green light is like a religious icon to Gatsby as he stretches out his arm towards it. In America green is also the colour of dollar bills, so it is appropriate that Gatsby recognised that the woman whom the green light represented had a voice ‘full of money’.
